Dr. Jannah Scott, Homeland Security Official, Faith-Based Initiative visit to Rev. Terry Lee in Flatbush. This meeting was attended by over 90 ministers.
Message by Dr. Jannah Scott:
I greet you this morning in the name of the Lord who has the highest power.
And I also greet you on behalf of President Obama, who was the highest power in this nation.
And I also greet you on behalf of Secretary Janet Napolitano, who is the authority over Department of Homeland Security.
We are grateful to be here with you today.
I just want to acknowledge Reverend Terry Lee. Many of you know that the word of the Lord and the really it comes from the Hebrew but it's in the Bible. It says that without vision. Without understanding they cast off your strength in some way. But because of Reverend Terry Lee's vision, that life is coming into Flatbush. And I see all of you here partnering with him, to bring life and to sustain life and your communities. And for that we are very grateful.
We're grateful for a man of vision, not only to talk about his own ministries, I don't think I even heard you mentioned by ways and hedges. But to bring people together across the great role of Brooklyn or whatever it's called I'm sorry, I'm from Arizona. So whatever Brooklyn is called.
So we are grateful for Reverend Terry Lee.
When President Obama spoke at the 2012 prayer breakfast, which is online on the White House's website, I was hoping we could pull that up.
He said that his face frames or forms policy, from his perspective, what he believes helps him to figure out what kind of policy decisions he's going to make. I think he took a lot of flack for saying that. But the truth of the matter is, even though we have in our Constitution, that we should not establish a religion. Doesn't the other side of that clause say that we will not prohibit the free expression there are?
We always talk about the separation of church and state, but which is the Establishment Clause? But do we talk about the expression clause? And I was so grateful when the President said that because I began to think what are some of the spiritual imperatives that he must be operating in when he is establishing policy, and this policy around faith based and Neighborhood Partnerships, it transformed to transcends administration.
I'm so glad Reverend Lee told the story about how he met me, he met me through the prior appointee under the prior administration, so that that link was made between administrations to keep this thing going. And I think that's what we've got to remember that the Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships effort is a non partisan effort. And that's a spiritual imperative, because we are told in the word that the Lord sees neither Jew nor Greek, neither Gentile, and he doesn't see man or woman, but he sees us all the same.
And so surely, as we tried to engage the people of faith, we would really be remiss to say, we are only going to engage those who believe, like the sitting administration believes.
And so this morning, we've had great opportunity to hear about how this initiative, transcends partisanship. And one of the things that I shared when I went to the White House prayer initiative with Pastor Lee is that this prayer thing, and Reverend Reid will be the first one to tell you, I came to my own personal faith tradition on the floor in a prayer room intercessors. And it's so wonderful to see you this morning. But the thing about it is that we must put feet to our faith, there's a lot of information that's been shared. And to be honest with you, this is just the tip of the iceberg. So I shared with Reverend Terry Lee, if the community would like us to come back for what he calls around to, we wouldn't be glad to do that. But he needs to hear from you all that this was worthwhile, and that you'd like for us to continue with these kinds of segments.
Other remarks:
Bishop Orlando, later, and I'm the chairman of Kosher churches united to save and heal. And we have come to partner with Pastor Terry Lee and the byway and hedges, Youth for Christ ministries, to welcome federal officials who have come into our communities to bring us good information regarding the federal government and many of the resources that they have available that oftentimes we are not privy to me.
We have definitely given our elected officials a free ride. We allow them again to come into our churches, we make a lot of promises, and we don't follow up. And I believe we have to hold him accountable. Even those that we work with even those that we're friends with, we have to hold people accountable. And the way we hold them accountable is by not having them telling us what they're going to do for the community, but rather us telling them what the community needs. And then we ought to take a census on have they delivered on their promises, and during election time. That's the time that we need to let our voices really hurt by determining do we keep people in offices, and if they haven't helped us, then we have to ask ourselves, why keep voting for people who are not helping our communities.
My name is Jeannie Kelly, and I am an outreach education coordinator with the World Trade Center Health Program at Mount Sinai. I was asked or invited to attend this meeting so that I may share information of what the how the program works, and what the treatment and the medical aspects of the program and how it relates to the responders that worked down at Ground Zero. During the days, weeks and months after 911. Anyone that was a responder from police, fire EMS, the National Guard, volunteer organizations, community based organizations, volunteer organizations of any sort with the New York City area, as well as the tri state area. We also have a survivor program. But what my job description is for mostly used to do the outreach and coordination for responders from the law enforcement community.
Well, actually we have President Obama signed the law into place as of July of 2010 11, I'm sorry, and regards to the Zadroga law, which allows the treatment monitoring and screening for responders. There is recognition now that many of those that did respond and partake in performing tasks during 911 have become ill. And because of the program as it is, as it stands on the NIOSH, which is the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, which is the federal program that oversees the funding, there has been funding that has been provided to us to lab to allow us to facilitate the screening process for those responders. The program is free without any cost to the responders. The monitoring services include doctors and physicians and psychiatrists from both the physical and the mental health side, to screen those responders.
They are all trained in occupational medicine. And then we're in order to recognize 911 related illnesses from both physical and mental health. And then from there they are allowed to be treated and that includes their prescription or any treatment services of X rays or pulmonary function tests or any surgeries and so forth. And subsequent visits every single year, every anniversary or calendar year from their first initial visit, they can go forth and go to any of our clinical care centers and be screened again and be treated without any cost to them. Because of the funding from the Bill. Yes, mental health is a as a mental health is a very instrumental part of the of the program.
Post Traumatic Stress is an identified illness from 911. In addition to depression, anxiety, panic disorders, there are several different types of mental health disorders that are affiliated with the, with this program that you can be treated from any of our social workers or psychologists that www.niosh.gov/ 911 responder, and you can take that link and download the application or you can move forward and you will get the phone number from the website or the Center for Disease disease control cdc.gov, the Worldwide Web cdc.gov
My name is Robert Lee Williams, from church of God deliverance temple of the living guys, I'm here on the Congress meeting, we are all here gathered to do plans about how to bring the church forward and along about Homeland Security and for the people who are in need. Praise God that we could get to meet with the people from the White House so that we could come together to start the work and sow a seed.
And then this is Bishop Roberto Brown. I'm Bishop off Park Slope Christian fellowship here in Brooklyn. I'm here to gather information that would help the community to develop and to help the residents of our communities to do better and have a better, a better way of life. That's my purpose for being here. I believe. I believe it was an excellent turnout because leaders came out. And leaders do represent numbers of people, great numbers of people. So I would hold that maybe 95 or 96% of the room were pastors and leaders and bishops and so on. Which which is a big great help.
For our community, because they represent congregations and people and they have been there people have influenced, I want to say, What's up to our colleagues, in terms of doing what the Scriptures are saying, not we have a great opportunity, I want to say what's up to all of the pastors and leaders and all of those that have influence over people by the grace of God, that we should get active and participate in the political arena that we need to participate. Because our citizens depend on it, our parishioners depend on it. And as New York goes as soon as the rest of the country and so is the rest of the world,
well, this is your surely Reverend terribly. And of course, I must commend What's up New York, among himself. But uh, Sean, and the watsapp crew now, but today event was a great success. We have a tremendous turnout today is magnificent. In other people's overwhelming with overfilled with resource on information.
Dr. Jannah Scott, you know, she spoke very fluently and all her executive that came along with her from Washington DC, the white Oh, Center for faith based initiative. You know, Bishop ventilador, that spoke and Dr. Loft, you know, with the 911 responders, you know, center that is establishing here in Brooklyn. And of course, um, you know, it is just so wonderful. It's just so awesome to see, the overwhelming people come from Vermont, Mount Vernon, you know, people come from the Bronx, Queens, Long Island, you know, Staten Island. And it's just nice to see, you know, all the closure, community leaders, you know, really come together to really make today a great success.
And I can only just say that today is part one. And I will say, get ready for part two, part two is coming. I also want to remind our families on May the fifth, our role leads to the lawn of the White House in Washington, DC. And we just want to encourage our friends and families, you know, to come out so we can pray for our president and family, pray for our leader pray for our nation.
We're asking volunteers to join by Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Facebook, my face, your face, our face. You know, I mean, name it. Even you know, Facebook, on book, even pocket book, or whatever book you have exercise book. You know, let's get on board. And let's make it up in what's up New York.
